Commandos 3 TutorialEditing Text

Tools You Need:
Dragon UnPACKer 5.4.0a (2,55 MB)
Download ConText Programmers Editor v0.98.6 (1,57 MB)
Other Tutorials You May Need To Read:
You need to know how to extract files with Dragon UnPACKer. If you don't know how, read this.
Its also better if you have a bit of knowledge how the modding works. If you don't know how, read this.

1. Start Dragon UnPACKer and open DATA.PCK.

2. If you have already extracted all of DATA.PCK you can go to number 3.
If you haven't.
For editing text you need to extract all of the STR folder from DATA.PCK to somewhere on your computer.

3. Open the STR folder you extracted.

4. You will see 3 files
CREDITS.STR =  This has the game credits.
END.STR =  This is the text displayed when you complete Commandos 3.
GLOBAL.STR =  This has nearly all the game text, from tool tips to mission names.

5. Now choose the type of text you want to edit. For this tutorial, we will change a tooltip from GLOBAL.STR.

6. Open GLOBAL.STR with ConTEXT.
You will see a very long list of text from Commandos 3.

Notes

Each line starts with a four letter code (e.g. TPIS) which is used in files instead of the text, so when its changed in the master file (GLOBAL.STR) it gets changed in all the files using that text. This means if you want to change a tooltip, you only change one file and not lots.
The text is written in between two speech marks ("), so make sure you don't leave one out, or you may get an error.
If you see // this means comment, and anything after this will not be read by the game. This allows you to make notes next to code, or put it in front of code to stop it being read, instead of deleting it.

7. First you have to find the text you want to change.
In this case we will change the tooltip ALLIED SNIPER RIFLE to Precision Rifle (Text doesn't have to be in CAPS, this is just how Pyro did it).
You see the tooltip ingame for the Allied Sniper Rifle displayed as ALLIED SNIPER RIFLE, so this what you search GLOBAL.STR for.

8. Press Ctrl + F to open the Find box. Make sure Whole words only is ticked or you may get it found inside other names.
Find the bit saying "ALLIED SNIPER RIFLE"
and replace it with "Precision Rifle"

This is changing the text that is displayed in any file using the code TRFF. The tooltip for the Allied Sniper Rifle uses this code, so it will now use our new text, Precision Rifle.

9. Now go to File and Save As. Using the dropdown menu at the top of the box, find where Commandos 3 is installed
(Default = C:\Program Files\Eidos\Pyro Studios\Commandos 3 - Destination Berlin)
When you find it, go into the Data folder and click the new folder button New Folder Button. Name the new folder STR.

10. Go into the new STR  folder, and save the file as GLOBAL.STR (Make sure you include the .STR).

11. If you have read the using mods tutorial you should have noticed that the edited GLOBAL.STR is now in the Commandos 3 Data folder, with the same file structure as DATA.PCK.

12. Now the fun bit, load Commandos 3 up and go to the mission Eliminate The Sniper in the Stalingrad campaign, and when the mission starts open the Sniper's rucksack. Now put your mouse on the Allied Sniper Rifle, and it should now display Precision Rifle.
