Commandos is a real-time tactics game set in World War II that puts you in command of a small squad of elite troopers. Send them behind enemy lines on a series of hazardous missions, and bring them back alive. Clever strategy has never been so furiously action-packed. Study the enemy's movements, develop a careful plan, synchronise your men, and launch them on a swift and fierce attack, using all your power and skill.
At the beginning of each mission the player will receive information regarding his characteristics and objectives, as well as about the units and material with which he can undertake the mission.
In the game scenario there will be various geographic and structural elements that configure the mission map, on which will appear deployed the defending units and the attacking ones. The player's units will appear in a preset position, and may consist only of commandos or they may also have one or more vehicles.
The number of these units will be very small, up to a maximum of 8 or 10 men in the most advanced missions.
The task of the player will consist in the analysis of the overall situation, paying special attention to the geographic elements, static and dynamic enemy defences as well as the means which he has for the operation. From here on, he will have to draw up the most appropriate plan to meet his objectives, and carry it out taking into account the dynamic variations that appear during the course of the mission due to the reactions of the defenders to actions which he undertakes.
During the execution phase the player will attempt to carry out his strategy, responding to unforeseen situations and to the reactions of the enemy. Surprise will be generally an essential factor, so the player should advance as much as possible in his mission before his presence is detected and the alarm is raised.
Once the specific objectives of the mission have been achieved, the last requirement will be to try to have all the members of the group escape, since the death of any one of them will often result in the failure of the mission. To do this, the player will have to foresee his escape route or be able to improvise one after the alarm sets into motion all the defensive resources of the Germans.
